Berlin on bike was an adventure! I have ridden a bike more than driven a car for many years now, but as a large group, in a new cycling infrastructure, it was interesting. Ha! Two moments stuck out to me from that day though. The first was Tempelhof airport. And the second was the East Side Gallery. I also loved the tufa installation!

Tempelhof stuck out to me because of the demonstration of the power of the people for which it stood. This huge tract of land had been preserved as a place for the public to enjoy the space, for wildlife to reclaim habitat, and for those without homes to dwell.

The East Side Gallery also spoke to me, not only through its variety of art pieces, but through the story that Michael related about the developer who came in the middle of the night to crash through the wall and begin work on a high-rise. To me this shows the value of the land, the space that was to be. The Wall was hated, a scourge, for such a long time, and then it was being preserved and used as a space for society to come together and speak through their art. But the pressure to build and to develop was so great that this person broke through the wall, which was now something different than it had been, to begin a space that s/he deemed to be even more valuable.
