Day 3_Courtenay
by Heather Courtenay
Today we made it to the furthest reach of the itinerary still accessible: the Observatory. About 4km out from the New Castle, not much remains. Puckler never actually built an observatory, but from the rise you can see a good chunk of the surrounding landscape. This area in particular shows the signs of WWII action, with a trench running through it and multiple hollows from explosions. Once out of the woods, a vista across to where the old racetrack was more clearly shows how the topography dips down to the actual track, then subtly arcs upwards for Puckler's colorful plantings. The summer haze blocks the views out to the mountains, but on a clear day this high point would have a clear line of sight far out into the countryside.
