Day 2_Courtenay
    by Heather Courtenay

Today we set out with a more directed data-gathering regime. As Kazu recorded material changes in the path, Andrew and I measured and catalogued trees that were original to the design. As we made our way up from the Double Bridge past Hermann's Oak, I started noticing more clearly the use of tree formations. Certain species, like poplars, are used as sort of exclamation points, encouraging you to stop and look. Others, like oaks and beeches, are sometimes assembled into walls, marking the boundaries between different thematic areas. Sometimes what the walls were separating is clear, in other cases it has been erased from the ground by time. A closer reading of Hints along with the tree catalogue might provide a stronger understanding of the use of tree formations. On this day, we made it out to the approximate center of the old racetrack, but nothing remains except a slight rise towards the center.
