Muskau Park (day 2)
    by Nick Wittkofski

Taking what was seen yesterday, I wanted to further analyze each view that unfolded from the carriage path. Pückler seemed to employ certain rules in his design of the park to emphasize these moments, beyond simply having gaps in the forest along the path. Key species were used at moments to mark intentional views, specifically Populus alba or Silver Poplar, which has a shimmery foliage that is a stark contrast to the beeches, oaks and lindens he used to construct the overall composition of the forests. From these views, there appeared to be strategic plantings of clusters of trees and swaths of forest that are visually quite distinct in tone and structure from the meadow. These clumps and swaths are layered quite effectively across the vista, which gives a sense of depth along with glimpses of other constructed spaces across the landscape adding a sense of grandeur to the view. While we know that everything on site (save the river and the major topgraphy) is designed, these views and experiences along paths feel as though you simply stumble upon them, they aren't forced at all, and as a result are often suprising to come across!
