Initial impressions of the landscape in the outer edges of Muskau Park piqued my interest in the construction and composition of the carriage routes and the views afforded by them back to the new Schloss, the English Bridge, and the Double Bridge. The scale of the park being quite large, Pückler took advantage of topographical changes and available space to layer swaths and patches of forest. I'm taken aback by how seamlessly multiple perspectives and layers of landscape materials come together. After this first day on itinerary 1b I’m finding myself in awe of and curious of the organization of the various paths, particularly in their pacing and the rhythm of various views as they unfold. Compared to the landscapes seen on the way in-flat monoculture pine forests-this park is an astounding creation. Reading about his strategies with soil amending, tree installation, and maintenance gave me an impression of how much of an endeavor this project was, but being here and actually traversing through this park has me dumbstruck at the sheer will, cost, and man power required to pull this off. I can easily understand how Pückler went into great debt on this venture.
